Project Aims: Nanotechnology has brought improvements in the quality of products in many fields, for example, electronics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, remediation, and catalysis. The smaller surface area of nanoparticles is thought to be highly reactive. Since many household products made of nanomaterials have been launched in the market, the waste containing nanomaterials is already being produced and this is likely to increase in the future, thus the incident of released nanoparticles in the environment is thought to be growing. The gaps in knowledge about the fate and impact of these nanoparticles on the environment need to be filled. Therefore, studies of nanomaterials must be carried on to assess their risk. This study will address the following specific objectives:

  • Assess the effects of a set of metal nanomaterials using C. elegans as a test species
  • Evaluate the contribution of particulate and dissolved fractions to any effects 
  • Evaluate any differences in the form of nanomaterials, such as composition, size, coating and morphology of the nanomaterials
  • Assess if some strains of C. elegans are more sensitive to nanomaterial exposure.
